Flowering Pine (Grevillea 'Noellii')

Vital Facts: Grevillea Noellii is a full sun dense shrub that is not only fast growing and evergreen, but also deer resistant and flowers pink blooms during the spring! It ties into the local conifer theme up here on the hill, looking very native and woodsy while growing up to 4 feet tall (1.2 m), 5 feet spread (1.5 m). Maintenance includes pruning after flower to keep it nice and bushy.

Just like lavender, this is a great one for people on the go during summers, as it likes to be deep watered once or twice a month, and only really hates wet feet from overwatering.

A few fun facts: Noellii, or Flowering Pine, is a hybrid from Australia where 250 species of Grevillea occur and is a member of the Protea family. You can propagate this plant from cuttings in the fall by pruning near a node and soaking the stem in water for 48 to 72 hours.

Helpful Hints: Like all Australian shrubs, go easy on the fertilizing, especially with fertilizers with high phosphorous. Maintenance includes pruning after flower to keep it nice and bushy.

Suggestions: As this plant is slightly frost sensitive (18 degree hardy), plant near your house for a woodsy look and for some protection during hard freezes. Mulching in the fall can help keep roots insulated from the cold in higher elevations (over 3000 feet).
