Deer Grass (Muhlenbergia rigens)

Vital Facts: Deer grass is a beautiful native grass which has year round interest. It's many flowering spikes grow to 4 feet tall and wide and is a nice drought tolerant plant for this hot climate. This plant is a nice native substitute for the invasive, but popular, pampas grass. Muhlenbergia is a beautiful specimen plant in dry areas such as rock gardens,

lavender gardens and along drive ways. It's deep roots also are good for banks that need stabilization for erosion control.

Growing conditions: It prefers full sun and fast-draining or sandy soil. Once established, deer grass is fairly hot and drought tolerant, but would appreciate occasional deep waterings in our hot climate. Make sure to amend your clay soil and not to plant in an area where water pools in the winter.

A few fun facts: Muhlenbergia rigens was used widely by Native Americans for coiled baskets. You can make baskets yourself from this grass using the green flower stalks of deer grass in the summer for the tightest weave.

Helpful Hints: Cut back every few years in late fall after it is has seeded to keep bushy and full for next spring. To best set off its golden spikes, use with contrasting textures found in Germanders, Lavenders, Sages, Native bush lupines, native California fuschia, and other native bunch grasses
