Growing conditions: It prefers full sun and fast-draining or sandy soil. Once established, deer grass is fairly hot and drought tolerant, but would appreciate occasional deep waterings in our hot climate. Make sure to amend your clay soil and not to plant in an area where water pools in the winter.
A few fun facts: Muhlenbergia rigens was used widely by Native Americans for coiled baskets. You can make baskets yourself from this grass using the green flower stalks of deer grass in the summer for the tightest weave.
Helpful Hints: Cut back every few years in late fall after it is has seeded to keep bushy and full for next spring. To best set off its golden spikes, use with contrasting textures found in Germanders, Lavenders, Sages, Native bush lupines, native California fuschia, and other native bunch grasses
